Delivering presentations and public speaking: Managing anxiety and building confidence

A neurodivergent employee was asked to deliver a presentation and lead a Q&A session. While they knew their content well, public speaking triggered strong anxiety especially having to answer unplanned question.

With Brain in Hand

Working with their Brain in Hand coach, the employee created a “Presentation Support” solution pack within the app. This contained practical steps for managing nerves, breaking down tasks, and practising delivery. The plan included:

  • Setting small, achievable goals such as rehearsing one section at a time.

  • Using grounding techniques before and after practice sessions.

  • Writing down common questions and preparing structured, confident responses.

In the days leading up to the presentation, they used the check-in feature to regularly check how they were feeling. When anxiety started to rise, they could identify triggers early - like worrying about forgetting lines, and act on them using the strategies in their solution pack. Sometimes this meant reviewing relaxation exercises; other times, it meant reaching out to their coach or using the on-demand support feature for reassurance.

On the morning of the presentation, their anxiety peaked again. Rather than letting it spiral, they pressed the on-demand support feature within Brain in Hand to connect with a trained responder. Together, they talked through what was about to happen, helping the employee feel centred and capable before walking into the room.

The results

The presentation went smoothly. The employee gained practical tools to manage anxiety, stay composed under pressure, and experience success on their own terms - transforming what was once a source of dread into an opportunity to demonstrate their strengths.
