Empowering Stability and Self-Advocacy: John’s Story

Challenges before Brain in Hand
John is autistic and has ADHD, he had faced significant challenges balancing work, university and mental health. He had previously experienced major mental health issues that left him unable to work or study for periods of time. He struggled to communicate how he was feeling and often became overwhelmed in work and social settings.
Before using Brain in Hand, John had limited support and found it difficult to express distress or ask for help, which put his employment, education and wellbeing at risk.
How Brain in Hand helped
Brain in Hand became a vital tool for emotional expression, crisis communication and daily self-management. The check-in system enabled Alex to communicate how he was feeling when words were difficult, both in day-to-day life and during crisis situations. It supported him in work, university, and social environments by helping others recognise when he needed support.
John used it alongside coaching and professional support, allowing him to rebuild confidence, stay connected, and communicate effectively. He describes the app as a reliable companion that empowered him to advocate for himself and stay safe, calm and in control.
The results
With Brain in Hand, John no longer suffers with mental health and staying out of work or his studies. His communication improved dramatically, reducing crisis escalation and increasing independence. He now takes part in regular social activities and feels more confident navigating everyday life. John believes Brain in Hand supported his mental health recovery and enabled personal growth, giving him the confidence to pursue his future goals.
“My friends have got peace of mind as well that if I do go into a situation when I'm by myself and it's a straight red, then they know that there's going to be someone just checking on me, making sure I am actually OK.”
