Will’s Story: Staying safe and supported with Brain in Hand
Providing safety, stability and reassurance during crisis

Challenges Before Using Brain in Hand
Will was living with severe mental ill health, including clinical depression, panic attacks, anxiety and fibromyalgia. His mental health needs were significant, and he had previously experienced suicidal thoughts. Day-to-day life required a high level of emotional support, particularly during periods of crisis, grief and physical ill health. Will needed support to manage anxiety, remember essential self-care tasks such as medication, and access immediate reassurance when he felt unsafe or overwhelmed.
How Brain in Hand Helped
Using Brain in Hand regularly, often on a daily basis, Will has experienced meaningful improvement in wellbeing and is achieving more than before. Brain in Hand has supported him to develop practical solutions to problems using the solution pack feature, manage panic and anxiety with the on-demand support, and engage in more meaningful social interactions. Crucially, Brain in Hand has helped Will stay safe during moments of acute distress.
“I had a day when I felt really bad, so I pressed red on my check in. Within half an hour someone rang me and managed to calm me down and reassure me.”
Brain in Hand has also supported Will’s physical health and independence by helping him remember to take medication through reminders and prompts. During a period of bereavement following the loss of a sibling, Brain in Hand provided vital ongoing emotional support, helping him use strategies to manage his mood when his mental health felt particularly fragile.
The Results
Without Brain in Hand, Will feels he would be at serious risk of crisis escalation. Having access to immediate, responsive support has reduced reliance on emergency services and provided a consistent safety net alongside other care.
“I dread to think what would happen without this as my mental health has been really bad to the point of not wanting to be here.”
Knowing that support is available through the app and telephone has helped Will feel safer, less alone, and more reassured, particularly during periods of suicidal ideation. Brain in Hand continues to play a critical role in maintaining his safety, supporting both his mental and physical health, and helping him manage day-to-day life when other forms of support are limited or unavailable.
