Finding calm and confidence through change
How Brain in Hand supported Emily to manage anxiety, build independence, and feel less alone
Challenges Before Brain in Hand
Emily is autistic and also experienced anxiety. Emily started using Brain in Hand just after COVID while in sixth form. She suffered from severe anxiety when starting sixth form; so much that she felt nauseous. This meant she sometimes skipped lessons and it affected her education. Emily also struggled with moving house and the change in her life that came with that. Emily had always tried to be independent and never asked for help before using Brain in Hand.
How Brain in Hand helped
During Emily’s move from her house, she found herself in a panic after arguing with her parents when packing her room. In this instance she was able to use the Brain in Hand app check-in feature where she was connected to the 24/7 support service.
“I think knowing that option was there for me when I did need help made me feel like I'm not alone and that so many other people are dealing with a similar thing.”
After using her solution pack, Emily benefited from being able to go outside of her comfort zone knowing that she had the support there and ready available. Emily uses the unplanned events regularly to help write lists to manage her thoughts and break her tasks down before ticking them off when she’s completed them. This helps her stay organised and reduces her overwhelm and anxiety. Emily’s coach has helped Emily tackle situations she’s struggling with and give her guidance.
“She's incredibly understanding, incredibly kind, supportive, encouraging in the past, no kind of struggle that wins.”
The results
Brain in Hand helped Emily to manage her anxiety on the days she needed it. She feels calmer and more able to navigate her life now with much more confidence. Emily’s coach has allowed her to feel much more trusting in people and support rather than previously trying to sort situations out on her own.
“I kind of feel like I've got my life together a little bit more, which is just really a nice feeling.”
